A couple of weeks ago a woman came in with remnants left over from an install. She had put carpet down on her stairway and wanted a couple of area rugs made up. One for her office and one for her front entrance. She was concerned, however, that the front entrance and the stairway having matching carpet would be too much aesthetically. She pointed out that her hand-rail was white and black and wondered if she should put a black serging yarn on the area in front of her door. I told her we could do whatever she wanted. She wasn't sure if the black serging would stick out too much, since the carpet was light grey with a beige pattern. After more thought, she decided to go with black serging to link the colors of the hand-rail and carpet together. It came out just fine!
With that being said, here are a couple of pictures to show you how choosing an accent color for binding or serging can really make your rug stand-out. If you're using the same carpet in multiple areas having a different color on each piece can give you just enough of a change to aid in bringing all the colors of your walls, curtains or accessories together.
As you can see in the pictures, I had six pieces of the same carpet. I had to choose if I wanted to match the field color, which is a rusty beige or match the black squares in the pattern. I opted to use both. You can see a major difference; with a subtle matching color, the binding makes everything flat. However, using a black accent color makes the pattern pop and frames the carpet, giving it a little more pizzazz!
Having options can be a positive thing (or in some cases a curse, if you're not good at making decisions). So, in the future if you have multiple areas in your home that need carpeting, don't forget to consider changing the color of your finished edges! It's a safe way to have differing looks room-to-room without having to pick out multiple carpets.
